Taiwan's air force has deployed its most advanced fighter jet squadron to bolster the island's defenses in the face of growing military threats from Beijing.

The F-16V flight, attended by the island's President Tsai Ing-wen, began at a time of heightened tensions across the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese military has been sending fighter jets into Taiwan's air defense detection zone on a daily basis and conducting military exercises nearby to increase pressure on the self-ruled island.

"The commissioning not only represents a new page in the history of our Air Force, but it also has three important meanings," Tsai said at Thursday's commissioning ceremony, referring to US-Taiwan cooperation and the island's aerospace and defense industries. Resistance.

It showed the value of Taiwan's relationship with the United States as the jets were upgraded with the help of American manufacturer Lockheed Martin, Tsai said at Chiayi Air Force Base in southwestern Taiwan.

Taiwan's Air Force and aircraft manufacturer Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) have signed a NT$110 billion (US$4 billion) contract with Lockheed Martin to upgrade the Air Force's 141 F-16A/B jets to the F-16V.

According to the Air Force, AIDC and Lockheed Martin have completed the modernization of 64 jets so far. Tsai said the innovation was a breakthrough for the island's aerospace technology and defense industry.

By operating the F-16Vs, the island is strengthening its security by taking into account the fighter jets' stealth capability, advanced detection capability and combat capability, she said.

During the event, the Air Force displayed jets performing combat take-offs and landings. Twelve F-16Vs in three groups — equipped with various types of missiles, including AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles — conducted formation flights and one flew solo, highlighting its capabilities. skills.

In addition to the ongoing redesign, the Air Force has ordered 66 new F-16s, including its J-20 stealth fighter, with new avionics, weapons and radar systems to bolster the People's Liberation Army Air Force's capability. Deliveries of the $8 billion jets are expected to begin in 2023, with the last batch to be shipped to Taiwan in 2026.

Flying's Top Gun: Maverick Music Playlist

Chieh Chung, a national security researcher at the Taipei-based National Policy Foundation, a think tank for the main opposition Kuomintang, said the F16V had more modern engines and fuel tanks than earlier F-16As/Bs, allowing it to carry more fuel. , fly further and get closer to mainland China.

"After the redesign, the jet's overall combat capability is 180% higher than the old version, and its detection capability is 220% better," Cheah said.

Compared to older generation radars, the F-16V's active electronically scanned array radar provided multi-mode surveillance capability and enhanced all-environment precision-strike capability, allowing it to pose a greater threat to the PLA.

However, Chinese military commentator Song Chongping said that while the F-16Vs pose a threat to the PLA, they do not change the balance of power between Taiwan and the mainland.

Jet Fighter Sonic Boom - A sonic boom that shook buildings and was heard throughout Ankara on July 23 caused panic on social media.

Around 15:00, a loud explosion was heard almost throughout the Turkish capital. Many residents flocked to news websites and social media to find out why.

Officials failed to provide a quick explanation to the public, paving the way for rumors that the boom was caused by an accident at a rocket factory in Ankara.

Other rumors offered various explanations, including a controlled explosion during road construction and unsubstantiated claims of a terrorist attack.

Almost an hour later, Ankara Governor Ercan Topaka issued a statement announcing that the noise was caused by a sonic boom created by an F-16 jet flying over Ankara to test the Turkish Aerospace Industry (TAI) modernization project.

Supersonic planes like Concorde made so much noise breaking the sound barrier that they were banned from flying over land. There hasn't been a supersonic commercial flight since the Concorde was retired in 2003. But NASA thinks it can change that. NASA's X-59 QueSST is designed to reduce the sonic shock wave from the vehicle's sonic boom and drag. The plane is being built by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Palmdale and is expected to make a sound about as loud as a car door closing.

Its design research speed will be Mach 1.42, or 940 miles per hour, at an altitude of 55,000 feet, and it will have a more sonic blast instead of a boom. The first flight tests will begin in 2022.

Jet Fighter Sonic Boom

In 2023, NASA will fly the X-59 over a test site at the Armstrong Flight Research Center in California to prove it is safe to operate in the National Airspace System. More than 175 ground recording systems will measure the sound of the X-59.

In 2024, NASA will fly the X-59 over various communities across the country to gauge people's reactions to the plane's solar blare — if they hear anything at all. The collected data will be shared with the Federal Aviation Administration and the International Civil Aviation Organization for their consideration in changing existing bans on supersonic flights over land.

The ban on such flights went into effect in 1973 and has hindered commercial supersonic ventures ever since, limiting supersonic travel to transoceanic flights.

If the rules change because of NASA's data, a new fleet of commercial supersonic jets could become viable, allowing passengers to board a plane and reach far-flung destinations in half the normal flight time. A flight from Los Angeles to New York can take about three hours instead of about 6 hours.

Although the single-pilot X-59 will never carry passengers, aircraft manufacturers may incorporate its technology into their own designs.

We have yet to hear of commercial airlines producing sonic booms. The Boom Overture is a proposed Mach 1.7 55-passenger supersonic aircraft with a range of 4,888 miles. Boom Technology plans to introduce the aircraft in 2029. Construction is scheduled for 2022, and commissioning is expected in 2025. Boom Technologies has partnered with United Airlines, Rolls-Royce and Japan Airlines to build the plane. The 205-foot-long aircraft will carry 65-88 passengers in all business classes. It is expected to climb to the edge of space at an altitude of 60,000 feet.

It would take 14 hours and 30 minutes to fly from Los Angeles to Sydney on a modern jet, but the discovery is expected to allow the route to be completed in 8 hours and 30 minutes. A 12-hour, 45-minute flight from Los Angeles to Seoul, South Korea will take six hours and 45 minutes.

Imagine walking down the runway on takeoff with no engine noise. That could soon be possible with NASA's first all-electric plane. It will be powered by a lithium-ion battery and renewable electricity. The X-57 is currently undergoing high voltage ground functional testing.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine said: "Today is a good day for the #United Nations Army and a bad day for Russian aviation. Su-25 destroyed two Su-30 and Su-34."

The harsh language used in the tweet was in reference to Ukrainian forces on Snake Island, who used similar language when they ordered Russian forces to surrender shortly after the war began.

Videos Show Russian Fighter Jets Buzzing U.s. Destroyer, Navy Says

The Lightning F-35 II is considered the most advanced combat aircraft in the world. It is not a jet fighter powered by US manufacturer Lockheed Martin. It is essentially a powerful jet armed with a computer that can process thousands of pieces of data per second and share it with other aircraft in the air and on the ground.

But are the jets right for the Bundeswehr? Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) announced on Monday that Germany wants to buy 35 jets of the Hurricane fighter, which has entered service for more than 40 years and can carry American nuclear bombs like the F-35.

"There are military reasons in favor of the F-35," said Rafael Loss, a security think tank at the European Council on Foreign Relations. "If you're going to deliver a nuclear bomb, it's better to do it with a stealth plane than with a plane that doesn't have that capability," he said. "We need a low-signature radar and the ability to detect and engage long-range targets. And the F-35 can do this better than any air combat system on the market right now."

What Happened To Russia's Air Force? U.s. Officials, Experts Stumped

But these opportunities come at a high price. Damage is expected to 35 fighter jets at a cost of about 4 billion euros ($4.4 billion). "On top of that, of course, there will be prices, which are significant," he said. In addition, for the necessary conversion of German military airports, probably several hundred million in cash must be invested from the economic side.

Without a Russian war against Ukraine, such a siege is unthinkable. But now the German government wants to improve the Bundeswehr with a special fund of 100 billion euros. Political opposition to a new nuclear bomber is also low. They were even less critical of the Greens. Once founded by pacifists, they are now part of Germany's ruling coalition.

The only Left Party that is in opposition is unequivocally against the purchase of F-35s. "Let's arm the Bundeswehr with new warplanes capable of carrying nuclear weapons," said Ali Al-Dailami, spokesman for the defense policy of the left-wing party in the Bundestag in the German parliament. "Nuclear participation in which US nuclear weapons are dropped by Bundeswehr pilots does not create security, but increases the threat of nuclear war in Europe. The horror of the Ukrainian war is not an excuse for the misuse of such weapons."

The German Air Force is apparently comfortable with the power to offer a successor to the aging turbine aircraft by the end of the decade. Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz pointed out that many other European armies were also chosen by the US fighter. "Weakening the ability to join Nata to protect their space and defend society," he said.

Chinese Fighter Jets Enter Taiwan's Defense Zone

In Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, and most recently in Finland and Switzerland, the F-35 was picked up. Air defense cooperation with Germany will become easier for them.

"And in France, this decision has become a disappointment," says Paul Maurice, a researcher at the French Institute of International Relations in Paris. "Here, the F-35 is understood as a symbol of US power in NATO. After all the speeches about the autonomy and control of Europe, it was expected that Germany would be more aligned with the European weapons policy."

After all, he said, what will happen if the United States withdraws forces from Europe, as it did under President Donald Trump? "It will happen with the next president, but also after the midterm elections," Maurice said. He adds that Europe is ready for such a development and that there should be more law in matters of security. "It takes ten to fifteen years of preparation to start now."

There are fears that the acquisition of the F-35 in France could be jeopardized by the Franco-German-Spanish FCAS, which stands for the Future Air Combat System. A billion-dollar project for the latest European fighter jet to replace the French Rafale and German EuroFighter aircraft by 2040. According to Maurizio, the defense community in Paris is now asking itself: "Does Germany still need FCAS at all? Or are the F-35s perhaps a long-term rather than a transitional solution?"

Fighter Jets Stock Footage

Berlin emphasized that it was only buying F-35s to replace the Tornadoes and not for other missions. An alternative, such as the aging American F-18 or the Eurofighter, which has been discussed in recent years, must first go through a long process to be considered capable of carrying nuclear bombs.

And the minister of defense has announced that 15 more European-made Eurofighters will be purchased for electronic warfare, that is, anti-radar measures. In addition, Lambrecht certified that there is still enough money left to take further FCAS. Like the F-35, this will be very complex and very expensive.

TEL AVIV: Israeli sensors detected the first Iranian drone on March 13, 2021 at 01:50, approaching Israel from the south. A second UAV was detected at 2:12 a.m., approaching Israel from the east. Minutes later, both Iranian drones shot down an Israeli Air Force (IAF) F-35, the first acknowledged operational aerial kill of a fifth-generation fighter.

Pentagon: Russian Jets Are Avoiding Ukraine Airspace To Avoid Being Shot Down

Operation Two Bridges, as the F-35 strike is known, took place almost a year ago, but the details were revealed only today during a special briefing by the IAF. The timing is noteworthy: Israel is releasing the information as a deal to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which Israel opposes, appears to be nearing completion.

Most importantly, Israeli sources say the operation led to the formation of the recently announced "anti-drone coalition" aimed at protecting Israel and some other countries from the growing threat of Iranian-made drones.

Two senior Israeli officials, one from the IAF and the other from Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intelligence, told reporters that the two unmanned aerial vehicles were Iranian-made systems, which were detected by a combination of IAFAEV aircraft and ground-based radar, the officials said. .

The two systems were on a transport mission, believed to be part of a technical assessment of the drone, which Israeli officials have named Shahad 197. After the two drones were shot down by air-to-air missiles launched by an F-35, the wreckage was recovered, and two systems were found to be carrying weapons believed to be aimed at Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, two of Iran's proxies.

Turkey Says It Has Shot Down Syrian Fighter Jet For Violating Its Airspace

"The plan was to drop the cargo through Lebanon and Gaza and back," said one of the officers.

The F-35s took off from the Nevatim Air Base in southern Israel. One aircraft belongs to Squadron 116 and the other to Squadron 140. Officers said the F-35's radar and other sensors make the plane ideal for such missions. "We anticipated the threat and made some modifications that improved the aircraft's capabilities in this type of mission," one said, without elaborating.

Neither the police nor other sources said exactly where the wiretapping took place, except to acknowledge that it was outside Israel's borders. The two senior officers also declined to name the countries through which the Israeli F-35 had to fly to intercept the two Iranian drones, but the fact that the Israeli planes were able to travel safely to the region is a sign that at least some cooperation is taking place between Israel and others on the Iranian issue.

Nato Meets As Russia Confirms One Of Two Pilots Dead After Jet Shot Down

In addition to being notable for the first (or at least publicly known) air-to-air attack by the F-35, Operation Two Bridges helped launch the creation of the newly formed "anti-Iran drone" coalition.

The coalition is a fairly new organization that has agreed to work together to counter the threat of Iranian drones, which are increasingly seen as the primary tool for Iranian aggression in the region. Official Israeli sources declined to comment on the structure of the coalition, including who was involved, but sources in Israel said "US sensors in the affected region are assisting the effort" and that the group consists of "targets of Iranian aggression." However, it seems safe to assume that Saudi Arabia and the UAE are also involved.

Close intelligence sharing among coalition members resulted in an attack last week on a command center in Yemen, from which coalition sources say Houthi rebels have launched armed drone strikes on Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other targets in the Gulf region.

Meanwhile, there is growing evidence that Saudi Arabia is following Israel's tactical lead and has begun attacking Iranian weapons convoys inside Syria in an attempt to destroy weapons destined for Houthi forces before they reach Yemen.

Pakistan Says It's Holding Indian Pilot After Jet Shot Down In Cross Border Airstrike

Israel has already attacked Iranian bases across Syria hundreds of times, as well as direct weapons convoys from Tehran to Syria and Lebanon via Iraqi soil, in an attempt to reduce the power of Iranians operating on Syrian soil.

According to an Israeli defense source, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has increased the delivery of drones to its proxies in the region and beyond in recent months. He noted that these drones were given to forces now supported by Iran in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, as well as Hezbollah in Lebanon, adding that they were also sold to Venezuela.

Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi movement said in November it had fired 14 drones at several Saudi cities, including Saudi Aramco facilities in Jeddah.

The coalition will also benefit from a new naval version of Israel's Iron Dome air defense system, known as the "C-Dome" system, which successfully completed a series of live-fire tests in late February. Israeli sources told Breaking Defense that the C-Dome will increase the protection of Israel's gas pumping platforms in the Mediterranean, but will also detect threats "far beyond Israel."

Khanamat Botashev, a retired major general of the Russian Air Force, was killed when his Su-25 attack aircraft was hit by a Stinger missile, according to the BBC's Russian-language service (English translation here ), which contacted three of Botashev's former subordinates.

British, Us Scientist 'decoding' Su 35 Fighter Shot Down By Ukraine; What Can They Get From The Russian Debris?

Botashev is believed to be the highest-ranking Russian pilot killed in a war in which Ukrainian aircraft and air defenses mismanaged the Russian air force. Equally important, Botashev is the latest in a string of Russian generals to die in action as they fought to encourage Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

On May 22, a short post was published on the Facebook page of the Ukrainian General Staff, stating that the Ukrainian 80th Air Assault Brigade shot down a Su-25 Grach (NATO reporting name "Frogfoot") with a 9x38 Igla ("Needle"), shoulder-mounted anti-aircraft missile. The post was accompanied by a photo of smoke on the horizon that allegedly marked the crash site near the city of Lviv in western Ukraine.

For now, there is no official confirmation from the Russian government. However, the Russian service of the BBC, which monitors Russian social networks, revealed rumors that Botashev was the pilot of the downed Su-25. Botashev reportedly attacked his target - which could have been troops or supply depots - with unguided missiles and then bombs, before his plane was hit by a Stinger missile as Botashev exited the target, according to one channel post. A telegram from a Russian who apparently witnessed the attack.

The American-made Stinger, which took a heavy toll on Soviet aircraft in the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s, is a shoulder-fired anti-aircraft weapon like the Needle. Other Russian pilots on the scene may have confused the two, or simply called any Ukrainian man-portable anti-aircraft missile a Stinger. Ukraine's arsenal consists mostly of Soviet-era weapons, but the United States has provided the jabs.

Before retiring, Botashev was a fighter-bomber pilot who eventually commanded the Russian Air Force's fighter regiment (roughly equivalent to a US Air Force wing of three squadrons and 72 aircraft). He was classified as a "sniper" or master pilot with 15-17 years of experience.

However, his career was cut short by a freak accident in 2012 involving an Su-27 fighter jet. "Major General Kanamat Botashev, at that time the commander of the Voronezh Air Base, flew to Karelia at the military airport in the village of Besovets," according to the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta. Jet Fighter Stick - Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for pilots, experts and enthusiasts. It only takes a minute to register.

Is there a specific reason why most fighter jets have the control panel between the pilot's legs and not on the sides like Airbus planes? I know the F-16 has side struts, but most of the others have a center.

Jet Fighter Stick

Jet Fighter Stick

Most current generation fighters have switched from center stacks to side mounted sticks. Almost all American fighters have a side stick. In Europe it's a bit of a mixed bag - the Typhoon (and Gripen) have the center sticks, while the Rafale has a side stick. The Russians stuck to the middle tree in the T-50.

Historically, fighter jets had center sticks. The sidebars are located behind the push-by-wire controls. Eurofighter says:

All military aircraft designs have to make compromises, but in a small cockpit, the central stick can cause special ergonomic problems, possibly limiting the size of the display area for instruments and/or screens... In such cases, the options are: and one of the sidesticks used in the F-16 will be However, if the cockpit is large enough and the geometry of the seating position is correct, then all that is needed is a central bar – on which the pilots of the four partner countries agree. The choice between center bars and side panels is 40% custom - the balance is for technical reasons. We have found that F-16 pilots transition easily and naturally to center stick.

The rod is used in many military fighters, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and Mirage III, but also in light aircraft such as Piper Cubs and products of the Diamond family of aircraft, such as the DA20, DA40 and DA42.

This system contrasts with the more elaborate "sideband" used in military fighters such as the F-16, Lightning F-35 II and Rafale, and civilian aircraft such as the Airbus A320.

The ctre column was started on the twentieth ctury round. In 1900, the Austrian Wilhelm Kress developed an airplane control panel, but did not apply for a patent. Instead, they patted French aviator Robert Esnault-Pelterie, who requested it in 1907.

Never forget that in a careless moment a weapon can cause serious injury or death. Make safe gun handling a habit that must always be followed. Once you've determined the gun is loaded, treat it as if it were loaded.

Choosing a safe direction must also take into account that a bullet can deflect or ricochet off any object it hits, and that bullets can penetrate walls, ceilings, floors, and windows.

3) Keep your fingers off the gun's trigger guard and trigger until you have aligned the gun's sights on a safe target and made the decision to fire.

By keeping your finger completely outside of the trigger guard until you reach the target, you guarantee that all shots will land safely on the intended target.

Remember that a bullet can travel several kilometers, so be sure where your bullet can hit before you pull the trigger. Never photograph for movement, sound, a flash of color or a rustling bush without identifying your subject. All firearms must be shipped to an FFL for transfer. If your dealer is not on our preferred list, they will need to email/download a copy of their FFL. For complete instructions, visit our Firearms Buying Process page.
