TEL AVIV: Israeli sensors detected the first Iranian drone on March 13, 2021 at 01:50, approaching Israel from the south. A second UAV was detected at 2:12 a.m., approaching Israel from the east. Minutes later, both Iranian drones shot down an Israeli Air Force (IAF) F-35, the first acknowledged operational aerial kill of a fifth-generation fighter.

Operation Two Bridges, as the F-35 strike is known, took place almost a year ago, but the details were revealed only today during a special briefing by the IAF. The timing is noteworthy: Israel is releasing the information as a deal to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which Israel opposes, appears to be nearing completion.
Most importantly, Israeli sources say the operation led to the formation of the recently announced "anti-drone coalition" aimed at protecting Israel and some other countries from the growing threat of Iranian-made drones.
Two senior Israeli officials, one from the IAF and the other from Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intelligence, told reporters that the two unmanned aerial vehicles were Iranian-made systems, which were detected by a combination of IAFAEV aircraft and ground-based radar, the officials said. .
The two systems were on a transport mission, believed to be part of a technical assessment of the drone, which Israeli officials have named Shahad 197. After the two drones were shot down by air-to-air missiles launched by an F-35, the wreckage was recovered, and two systems were found to be carrying weapons believed to be aimed at Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, two of Iran's proxies.

"The plan was to drop the cargo through Lebanon and Gaza and back," said one of the officers.
The F-35s took off from the Nevatim Air Base in southern Israel. One aircraft belongs to Squadron 116 and the other to Squadron 140. Officers said the F-35's radar and other sensors make the plane ideal for such missions. "We anticipated the threat and made some modifications that improved the aircraft's capabilities in this type of mission," one said, without elaborating.
Neither the police nor other sources said exactly where the wiretapping took place, except to acknowledge that it was outside Israel's borders. The two senior officers also declined to name the countries through which the Israeli F-35 had to fly to intercept the two Iranian drones, but the fact that the Israeli planes were able to travel safely to the region is a sign that at least some cooperation is taking place between Israel and others on the Iranian issue.

In addition to being notable for the first (or at least publicly known) air-to-air attack by the F-35, Operation Two Bridges helped launch the creation of the newly formed "anti-Iran drone" coalition.
The coalition is a fairly new organization that has agreed to work together to counter the threat of Iranian drones, which are increasingly seen as the primary tool for Iranian aggression in the region. Official Israeli sources declined to comment on the structure of the coalition, including who was involved, but sources in Israel said "US sensors in the affected region are assisting the effort" and that the group consists of "targets of Iranian aggression." However, it seems safe to assume that Saudi Arabia and the UAE are also involved.
Close intelligence sharing among coalition members resulted in an attack last week on a command center in Yemen, from which coalition sources say Houthi rebels have launched armed drone strikes on Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other targets in the Gulf region.
Meanwhile, there is growing evidence that Saudi Arabia is following Israel's tactical lead and has begun attacking Iranian weapons convoys inside Syria in an attempt to destroy weapons destined for Houthi forces before they reach Yemen.

Israel has already attacked Iranian bases across Syria hundreds of times, as well as direct weapons convoys from Tehran to Syria and Lebanon via Iraqi soil, in an attempt to reduce the power of Iranians operating on Syrian soil.

Khanamat Botashev, a retired major general of the Russian Air Force, was killed when his Su-25 attack aircraft was hit by a Stinger missile, according to the BBC's Russian-language service (English translation here ), which contacted three of Botashev's former subordinates.

Botashev is believed to be the highest-ranking Russian pilot killed in a war in which Ukrainian aircraft and air defenses mismanaged the Russian air force. Equally important, Botashev is the latest in a string of Russian generals to die in action as they fought to encourage Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
On May 22, a short post was published on the Facebook page of the Ukrainian General Staff, stating that the Ukrainian 80th Air Assault Brigade shot down a Su-25 Grach (NATO reporting name "Frogfoot") with a 9x38 Igla ("Needle"), shoulder-mounted anti-aircraft missile. The post was accompanied by a photo of smoke on the horizon that allegedly marked the crash site near the city of Lviv in western Ukraine.
For now, there is no official confirmation from the Russian government. However, the Russian service of the BBC, which monitors Russian social networks, revealed rumors that Botashev was the pilot of the downed Su-25. Botashev reportedly attacked his target - which could have been troops or supply depots - with unguided missiles and then bombs, before his plane was hit by a Stinger missile as Botashev exited the target, according to one channel post.
